SHE CAME IN CAPITALS

She ain’t enter quiet.
Nah.

She came with the volume turned disrespectfully high,
purple in her hair,
gold on her skin,
whole damn alphabet behind her.

They said,
“Know your place.”

She said,
“I am the place.”

Baby,
she ain’t background.

She ain’t decoration.

She ain’t somebody’s
pretty little footnote
waiting to be explained.

She got braids full of stories,
eyes full of don’t-play-with-me,
and a face that says:

I know exactly what you see.
I just don’t care what you call it.

Pretty?
Yeah.

But don’t get it twisted.

Pretty got teeth.

Pretty got history.

Pretty survived being looked at
and still decided to look back.

So let the letters scream.
Let the colours clash.
Let the whole damn frame get nervous.

Because she came in capitals

NO lowercase version.
NO edited version.
NO apology attached.

Just her.

Taking up space

Baby

we been that girl.

The one they couldn’t read.
Couldn’t tame.
Couldn’t put in a little box
with a cute little label
and call it a day.

We came with too much colour.
Too much mouth.
Too much melanin
and not enough apology.

Mama said,
keep your head high.

Grandma said,
don’t let nobody play with you.

And God said

I made you loud
because the world needed
something it couldn’t ignore.

So yeah,

I got my shades on.

Not because I’m hiding.

Nah, baby.

I’m protecting
what’s sacred.

Because everybody
don’t deserve access
to the light
I fought to become.

And the little girl beside me?

That’s the future.

That’s the reason
I survived the past.

That’s the proof
that all this pain
didn’t get the final word.

We don’t just break cycles.

We break the whole damn chain

God’s Hair Was Never Straight

Before the first church,

before the first kingdom,

before anyone decided

holiness should be quiet

God picked out an Afro.

The stars learned rhythm

from coils.

The moon borrowed

its shine

from melanin.

Our grandmothers

hid galaxies
